Dakota Johnson To Star In Sony’s ‘Madame Web’

It’s been a moment since we heard anything about Sony’s Madame Web project, but the silence has been broken with word of a star attaching herself to the film.

Deadline reports Dakota Johnson is in talks to take the title role. The film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The character, created by Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr, was a precognitive mutant who also happened to be blind and paralyzed. Using a sophisticated web-themed rig, she was mobile and able to use her talents to tip off Spider-Man to certain crimes and activities. She came to some prominence in the 1990s Spider-Man animated series on FOX, where she used her enigmatic appearance and precog talents to send Peter on various missions. And as an ally of The Beyonder, she was actually testing Peter for a perilous journey with multiversal implications.

Word of the film first broke in 2019 as part of the studio’s aggressive plan to develop Spider-Man characters into their own properties. But as Madame Web rarely fights opponents, Deadline’s sources say the project could “turn into something else.” Of course, the Sony Spider-Man films are known for being a little looser with the source material, so a film detailing her earlier days is always possible as well.

And with Spider-Man: No Way Home finally out in the world, we know the Multiverse is a wondrous place and Madame Web — whatever form it takes — can occur in just about any reality. But we imagine quite a few people would love to see Cassandra Webb test Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man at some point.

Madame Web is not yet scheduled for release.
