‘BioShock’ To Become A Netflix Film

Netflix is plotting a return trip to Rapture.

The streamer announced Tuesday its plans to produce a film based on the BioShock video game series (per Variety). The first BioShock told the tale of an underwater city called Rapture and its dubious founder, Andrew Ryan. The second game also took place in Rapture, but the third — BioShock Infinite — took place in Columbia, a city in the clouds. Presumably, the film will adapt the first game.

“Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today,” Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive, said in a statement. “We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world. 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.”

Of course, there is the usual trepidation with any video game film adaptation. Although, the strong narrative and world of BioShock may counteract the pitfalls often associated with taking an interactive experiences into film and television.

As with all newly announced projects, it is unclear how quickly you’ll be able to watch BioShock. In the instance, no creatives or cast have been revealed, so it may be a great while before the film comes together.
