‘Seven Samurai’ Meets ‘Star Wars’ In Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’

Back in 2013 Zack Snyder was in discussions with Lucasfilm to create a stand alone Star Wars film inspired by Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. The project didn’t pan out but Snyder has been working on the concept as an original SciFi story. Now titled Rebel Moon, Snyder’s scifi project will be a Netflix original film starring Sofia Boutella (Kingsmen: Secret Service).

In Rebel Moon, a young woman from a planet facing invasion sets off on a journey to neighboring planets to find warriors to defend her home. The script is being co-written by Snyder, Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead, John Wick 3), and Kurt Johnstad (300). Much like Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon could lead to a universe of other projects.

Snyder says

I’ve never done a science-fiction film at this scale. The beginning of Man of Steel on Krypton has pretty big sci-fi elements, but it’s still Krypton and there are certain iconographic things that you have to do. And that’s kind of what we’re doing in Rebel Moon, but on the biggest steroids I can give it.

The Krypton sequence in Man of Steel remains one of my favorite pieces of science fiction in film. If we get that kind of science fantasy mythology as an entire film that would be awesome. I think it’s also better that Snyder focuses on original IPs. Guy Ritchie is also a stylized action director that was met with mixed reception on large scale IP films who’s now dong what he does best in his own universe. Even apart from DCU the Snyder-Verse lives on.
