Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s ‘Big Bug’ Gets First Trailer

In Big Bug a group of bickering suburbanites find themselves stuck together when an android uprising causes their well-intentioned household robots to lock them in for their own safety. This is the latest film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet who’s known for other genre-defying works such as Amélie, Delicatessen, and The City of Lost Children. Jeunet was a cult filmmaker in the 90s and early 2000s with his films influencing everything from the look of Batman Arkham Asylum to Psychonauts.

However, it’s been over twenty years since Jeunet has had a hit. Big Bug has all of his directorial trademarks including retro-futurism and extreme close-ups on unusual faces. One can only guess how new audiences will respond to Jeunet’s vision. With the growing acceptance of imaginative indie films Big Bug could be a welcome revival. But if the story doesn’t resonate we could be looking at a an R-rated version of 2003’s Cat in the Hat.

Look out for Big Bug streaming on Netflix February 11.
